Melissa Haro's Q&A
The one thing I'm absolutely obsessed with lately is ...
I love country music. I can't get enough of it. I just went to Toby Keith's concert. In fact, there was a concert this weekend I really wished I could have gone to but I'm home in California preparing for an event that's coming in the next few weeks. My favorite country singer is Carrie Underwood. I love her. One of her favorite songs of mine is Before He Cheats. But Toby Keith is amazing and he's really hot. My mom, my aunt, my whole family are big on karaoke. I can't sing at all but I grew up listening to them and there's a machine at every house for every family and pretty much every song they sing is country.
On a quiet, rainy day I usually ...
Do exactly what I am doing today; I invite some friends over, we eat party platters and we play a lot of Guitar Hero. I'm still working on the easy setting. My cousin just started on medium today so I'm really jealous because I've been playing as much as her and I want to play on medium, too, so I'm starting on the easy song like Slow Ride or Hit Me With Your Best Shot on medium, I'm trying to get used to the extra blue button on the controller.
If I were giving a tour of my home, the one place I wouldn't show anyone is ...
The one place if I wouldn't show is my office. It's a complete disaster. There's paperwork everywhere, there's magazines everywhere. It's kind of where I go to get lost in my work. If you ever come over don't go in there. I try to spend a couple hours in there every day talking with agents and clients and figuring out my finances. My mom is my manager and she handles all my finances and my flights and all that good stuff so I spent a lot of time on the phone with her it's kind of a place I can go and be alone but since we have Guitar Hero its kind of loud in my house today.
The sexiest thing a man has ever done for me is ...
Cook. I love a man that can cook. If they can do any Italian dishes that would be amazing. I love spaghetti and throw some man-made meatballs, I'm ready for it.
And the sexiest thing I've ever done for a man is ...
Well I've been told that the sexiest thing I have ever done for a man is dance. Whether it is jumping on my furniture shaking my tooshie or whether it's busting out every move I can think of on the dance floor. I'm really spontaneous when it comes to dancing when there's music around. It's really hard for me to contain myself.
I feel a secret connection with ...
My mom, she knows me better then anybody in this world. I think she has a little bit of ESP because anytime I've ever been in trouble or ever needed her she's automatically there even if she's not alerted on the issue. She knows exactly how I feel with me only giving her a few hints of what's going on.
In a past life I was ...
My dad thinks I would have been a bird because I'm really free spirited and independent, and my friend thinks I would have been a fast car. I really can't choose between the two of them because I would love to fly if possible but I love fast cars and speed and adrenaline. I'd love to be a Corvette. I grew up with a '65 Stingray in my garage and there's just something really sleek and sexy about the body style of a '60s Corvette.
If I didn't have any responsibilities tomorrow morning, I would spend tonight ...
That's an interesting question because a lot of the time when I'm here in California visiting my friends and family I don't typically have responsibilities. Most of my work is done in New York and Paris. When I'm home, a lot of times my friends and I just jump in the car and take a road trip up to Santa Cruz, hang out on the beach and wait for the sun to rise.
If I didn't have any responsibilities for a week, I would go to ...
I would honestly go home if I had a whole week where I didn't have to do anything but have fun and spend time with my friends and family. That's what I would be doing, hanging out in San Jose, Calif. I live my life pretty spontaneously because I never know what to expect; when the next phone call is going to come and I have to jump on the plane so I really don't make plans. During the summer we love to go to the beach in Santa Cruz. We might even go up to Tahoe for a couple of days in the winter to do some snowboarding. A friend of mine has a quad and we love to go drive it around on the tracks and maybe even try to stunt it a little bit. I'm having a little trouble doing a wheelie; I can't get to my balance point but I can pop it up pretty good.
The last thing I really splurged on was ...
My turbo-charged S60r Volvo. I knew that I wanted a fast car like that. I'm into adrenaline and speed and one of my favorite things to do especially when I'm down or I just need stress relief is to go driving in the mountains over behind my house because there's some really beautiful winding roads and its just a lot of fun. I love winding so I knew I wanted a car I could do that in and my car happens to be all road charged so it takes corners like a breeze. I'm also into trucks and four wheelies as well. I took a look at both, like SUVs and trucks. I looked at cars like the BMW 3-series and I took my brother with me car shopping because he's a car genius and he knows much more than I wish to know.
If I were going to a costume party tonight, I would dress as ...
Well, I have this cute little red corset that I rarely get to wear so I would probably put that on and pair it with some jeans with these little clip-on devil horns so I would be a devil. That's what I was last Halloween so if someone had a costume party tonight that is what I would be.
When I get dressed to go to the grocery store, my clothing inspiration is ...
I would probably sit down and try and figure out what I could wear to match the cart. I'm just kidding. When I go shopping my inspiration is mostly comfort so you would probably catch me there wearing slippers and sweats.
When I get dressed up for a party, my clothing inspiration is ...
Well If I was going to a party my inspiration would be sophisticated but sexy. And I would want to throw a little bit of fun in there -- maybe something shiny or glittery or just something fun.
One thing I do only when I'm home completely alone is ...
I clean my house. There's no one or nothing to distract me from getting the things done I need to. I know it's a weird answer but its true when I'm home in California I love spending a lot of my time with friends and family and I do have roommates so its not often I have time alone in the house and usually when I'm here I get distracted because I want to hang out, talk and play so when I'm alone I take the opportunity to clean. Honestly it really does relax me when I'm cleaning. My mind is on what I am working on and when I'm done and I look back at how nice my house looks. I'm really proud of that.
The one thing I hate for people to know about me is that I ...
Let's see, one thing I hate for people to know about me is that I'm really clumsy, and I'm a big nerd. Like a lot of times you'll catch me playing chess or reading a book or you know just being nerdy and goofy. One of my favorite books, and I know its kind of a weird answer is Go Ask Alice. I read that book in high school for a book report. It's a sad book it's about a girl who got caught up in drugs and that lifestyle. I don't know what it is about that book but it's really interesting. The book is a diary and it cuts off in the end. They don't explain how she dies. It's an amazing story.
If I had to spend $1 million right now, I would ...
Well If I had a million dollars to spend I would give a large majority to my parents because they've raised me and done so much for me and I want them to live comfortably and happy because they're both near retirement so I would give them a lot of that money. With the rest of it, I would buy myself a farm and I would put horsies and piggies and goats and ducks on it. I'd probably build it out here in California. I really, really love the Bay Area and right in Fremont there are really pretty mountains with wide open space and I want to raise my children here not only because I love this place and it's where I grew up but my family is here and my children's family would be here.
If I had to spend $10 right now, I would ...
I would go to Cold Stone Creamery. My favorite flavor is the Birthday Cake Re-mix which is the cake batter and sprinkles and brownies and all kinds of good stuff.
And if I had to spend $1 dollar right now, I would ...
I would buy myself a Twix bar. In fact I am probably going to get one after this interview. With chocolate and caramel and cookie and all that goodness, it's the best.
The sexiest I've ever felt was ...
On my SI shoot in Cayman Island. The whole photo shoot I felt like a goddess. My whole career, SI was the top, like the gold medal. They use the most beautiful women I have ever seen and to be a part of that made me feel completely honored. To be honest I didn't get a chance to look at a lot of the photos they shot because I was also doing a self-portrait and model diary and all these other things like makeup and hair but I do have to say I felt really sexy when I did one shot that was topless and I was covering myself with booty shorts and with a big old pirate hat. I was just playing in the sand and I felt so cute and sexy just rolling around and having a good time.
The one place I've seen that I'll never forget is ...
That's a tough question because I've seen the most beautiful places in the world and the most beautiful beaches and the most amazing cities, but I'd have to go with Yosemite which is California's little treasure right here in my home town. I've been going there ever since I was born. We would do yearly camping trips with my family every year and it's is one of our favorite places to go. We like to go there in the wintertime and get cabins.
I won't date a man if he ...
If he's fake or puts on a front. Usually if a guy is fake or is putting on a front he acts really nervous around me. I just want a guy who wants to get to know me and he needs to relax. I want to get to know him for who he is not who I want him to be.
My favorite time to be naked is ...
Anytime the situation works. Anytime I could be naked without being in trouble for it. I love sleeping the nude especially when I have silk sheets on the bed.
When it comes to nudity, most people don't know that I ...
I have a little rose tattoo. Nobody really knows about it. It's my little secret. I have shown people the spot. I can show you but it's never been photographed and even if it has been photographed it was Photoshopped out because they don't use a lot of tattoos in photo shoots, so it's my little secret.
When I open my eyes in the morning, the very first thing on my mind is ...
First thing on my mind when I wake up on the morning is, 'Damn, it's already 2 p.m.' When I don't have a reason to wake up the first thing on my mind is, 'Damn, it's late.' My morning pretty much consists of going to Starbucks and coming back home. I usually get some for my roommates too.
My favorite thing to do in the comfort of my own room is ...
Well, yeah, the same thing everyone does in the comfort of their own room ... sleep.
An athlete I have a secret crush on is ...
I love Dale Earnhardt Jr. He drives race cars and I'm attracted to speed. I had a photo shoot at a raceway once and they told me I was going to shoot with one of the drivers. Dale actually crashed a Corvette which happened to be my favorite car and he had to be airlifted out and after that. They told me the driver I was supposed to shoot with can't shoot with me anymore, so we have to use this driver instead, which wasn't who they had chosen. I'm wondering if it had been Dale Earnhardt Jr. Maybe I'll get to do a shoot with him in the future.
How about an entertainer?
Toby Keith. He's a bad boy. He's got a voice that can make a girl melt and he's just all around sexy.
And name one surprise crush who most people wouldn't find particularly attractive.
It's a little off the wall, but it's not really a crush I just really love this man he makes me laugh and he's such a goof ball. I would have to go with Bob Saget. I grew up watching Full House and I think he's amazing. His standup routine has gotten dirtier, but if you see him on America's Funniest Home Videos and Full House and things like that, he's just a nerdy, goofy guy. I love how he has two sides to him.
If I could be anything but a model, I would be ...
If I wasn't a model I would be a veterinarian. The only thing is, though, in the ninth grade I had to dissect a lobster and I had to watch it die before I could dissect it and I realized being a veterinarian there are going to be many animals that I am going to have to dissect in order to get the knowledge to save the animal and I don't want to kill all these animals. So I guess what I really would like to do now is open a chain of veterinarian hospitals across America that are affordable for everyone.
In a group of people, I'm always the first to ...
Say or do something goofy.
The worst lie I ever told was ...
I don't lie. Yeah I just did. I just told you a lie.
To impress a cute man at a bar, I would ...
I would probably tie a cherry stem in a knot with my tongue and give it to him. I was at a wedding and I was in my early teens and I was just really bored and I was too young to drink or anything so I found a bowl of cherries and I love cherries so I started eating cherries and an older friend of mine came and was like 'Can you tie the stem with your tongue?' and I was like, 'No way, how do you do that?' So she sat there and taught me and I practiced it the whole night. It's kind of a flirty type of thing. It's like 'look what I can do.' My cousin can unwrap Starburst with her tongue and I do the cherry knot so we make a pretty good team.
The last time I saw a woman and thought "I wish I looked like her" was ...
I can't stay that has really happened to me. I never wished I looked like someone else because I am really content and really happy with what God gave me and God blessed me with. There have been times when I look at another women and see one of her assets like her really pretty blue eyes or really nice long hair and I would be like, 'Wow I wish my hair was like that,' but as of looking like someone that has never really happened to me.
The one thing I'm superstitious about is ...
No I'm not a superstitious person but I am terrified of the dark. I sleep alone and I leave the hall light on or a night light or I leave my window cracked so I have some light from the street coming in.
My personal hero is ...
Once again that would be my mom, Linda Harro. My mom is my best friend, she is my advisor, she's my everything. She's always been there, when I've needed saving she's caught me when I fell. She just has so much wisdom that I stay as close as I can to her.
Do you have any sort of special connection with your hometown?
My hometown of San Jose is full of my friends, my family and some of my favorite memories growing up. I never moved I was born and raised in the same house my whole life and that house was my grandparents' house before it was our house so pretty much my whole life is here in California.
Where's the one place you have to go when you're in your hometown?
Denny's. The little truck stop restaurant. I love it. There's one here in Fremont and I have a lot friends in Fremont and it's only a 15-minute drive from San Jose and I go to this one that's right in the middle of it and I bought a house in Fremont, but I still consider San Jose my hometown. The Denny's on Warm Springs is my favorite. There's nothing really unique or different about it other then the memories there. We used to tease a waiter and say that he was Batman and that Denny's was his secret identity, working at Denny's, and so we would tease him about that and he used to wear Batman stickers on his nametag. We were always there when I would get back from a trip I'd be like, "Let's go to Denny's." I have a favorite meal, Moons Over My Hammy. It's my favorite but instead of hash browns I get seasoned french fries with a side of ranch. That's the best.
What are your thoughts on global warming and our role in the environment?
Well, I watched the Al Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth, and Winston Churchill once said we're living in an era of denial and procrastination and if we don't so something soon we're going to be living in an era of consequence. And I think that's true right now. It is a huge issue that we need to address whether you have money and fame to do something about it or you're just someone living life normally and happily. Let's all do something about it. The role we are playing right now is destructive and we need to change our role to reverse what is going on. We're going to lose our beautiful planet and we'll only have ourselves to thank for it in the end.
